I partook of a very English ritual this evening: listening to the shipping forecast on BBC Radio 4. In her book Watching the English, anthropologist Kate Fox mentions that it's the closest thing to a religious observance many people in England have. At first, that seemed bizarre, though now I can see some logic in it. I imagine it would be rather reassuring to hear that all those areas surrounding one's home are out there as always and, even with showers, good.

Idea: make a project of visiting all the North Fitzroys in the world. There's one in the shipping forecast regions around Britain (though that's an area of sea more than a place), and also one in the Falklands.
